Wedding mornings have a particular kind of light. Early, soft, a little nervous. You pull up outside the house and the whole place is already awake — someone’s doing hair in the kitchen window, a bouquet is sitting in the fridge, and a small person in a waistcoat is very pleased with his shiny shoes.
My imaginary passengers today are the bride and her dad — let’s call them Rosie and Big Tom. Rosie is calm in the way people are calm when they’ve decided to enjoy the day no matter what. Tom is not calm at all. Tom has checked that his speech is still in his pocket four times before we reach the end of the road.
The quiet ten minutes
The drive to the venue is the one still moment in a day that has none. No guests yet, no photographer — just a father and a daughter and a car gliding through the Peak District in the morning sun. They don’t say much. They don’t need to.
You get to be a small, calm part of somebody’s biggest day. You take that seriously — you drive smoothly, you get there early, and you keep the tissues handy.
We arrive two minutes ahead of schedule, because being late is simply not on the menu today. Tom takes a breath, Rosie squeezes his arm, and off they go into the rest of their lives. I linger a moment, because the light really is lovely, and then I quietly pull away.
