You always know the first proper frost is coming. The night goes still, the sky goes clear, and in the morning the whole of Dronfield is dusted white and glittering under the streetlights. Lovely to look at. Less lovely if your car’s been sat out in it.
My imaginary passenger this morning is a chap we’ll call Dev, off to catch an early train for a big interview. He comes out expecting to have to scrape a windscreen and instead finds a warm car, demisted and ready, engine running, heater on. The look on his face is the whole reason you set the alarm early.
The small luxury of a warm car
It’s a little thing, a warm car on a cold morning. But on the day of an interview, or a flight, or a hospital visit, the little things are quietly enormous. No numb fingers, no half-scraped windscreen, no starting the day already flustered.
Half this job is just removing the small stresses before they’ve had chance to become big ones.
Dev spent the drive muttering interview answers under his breath. I told him he’d be grand. He got the job, as it happens — or at least, in this entirely made-up story, he did.
Why we’re up before the frost
Because the first cold mornings are exactly when people most appreciate someone else doing the driving. Autumn tips into winter, the diary fills with early starts, and there’s something satisfying about pulling up warm while the rest of the street reaches for the scraper.
